Why do I keep getting comments in Russian that make no sense? Well really it’s the same reason as all those other spam comments in English (or other languages). Some clever clogs set up a bot factory to try and get links back to their website to help promote their websites position in search engines. There are people who do it in every language but for some reason, I’ve noticed I get a lot of Russian comments as do some of my friends.
Luckily, there is a very simple way to reduce and practically stop getting these Russian Spam comments (and spam comments in other languages too). An anti-spam plugin. Your WordPress install probably came with a copy of one of the most popular anti-spam plugins.
Akismet is from automattic, the company behind WordPress hence why it is probably already installed when you set up your site. This service does a decent job of blocking out most spam and should be good enough for most people. You can set up an account for free but to do so you need to go to Akismet, choose the “pay what you want” price, select your price (for example, $0), then fill in your payment details (if necessary) and click continue. Now you can get an API which you enter into the setting on your WordPress site once you have activated Akismet.
If you have set up a Jetpack account with the Jetpack plugin from Automatic, then you can also connect Akismet via your Jetpack account.
If you don’t want to set up an account then Antispam bee is worth checking out. It monitors all the comments and does a great job of blocking comments. On a site I recently set up where it was unclear who should be the go to person for the anti spam account, I used Antispam bee for simplicities sake and it has worked very effectively
There are plenty more plugins out there which offer variations and similar services. Some add in a CAPTCHA form to check, others don’t. Some will stop spam messages in your contact forms, email sign up page and other services, others only protect your comments section. If you are just starting out then I’d recommend using Akismet until you find out you need something more serious, if you don’t like signing up for an account, then use Antispam bee.
